€12m large scale sports hub coming to Mayo
Minister of State, Alan Dillon TD, has confirmed an exciting development for Mayo, a €12 million state-of-the-art multi-sports campus application has been lodged with the Department of Sport.
Minister Dillon stated: “I am delighted to confirm that Mayo County Council has submitted an application under the Large Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund (LSSIF).
"This ambitious project, located near Lough Lannagh, includes plans for a multi-lane international standard running track, multi-sport playing fields with new 4G synthetic grass for GAA, soccer, and rugby, all equipped with floodlights on a greenfield site at Knockaphunta, Castlebar."
He continued: “The athletics track and playing pitches will cater to athletes at both national and international levels, building on the success of Castlebar swimming pool, tennis courts, and the surrounding walks.
"This multi-use sporting development will be available to clubs and sporting organisations across Mayo and beyond.”
Minister Dillon emphasised the importance of this project.
“As someone who knows the value of playing and participating in sport, we must raise our level of ambition to ensure Mayo has the sporting infrastructure that reflects the standards we aspire to reach.
"We must invest in our athletes, providing them with international standard facilities to train and compete against the best in the country.
"Additionally, we aim to attract regional and national competitions to the west, making this facility best in class.”
He added: “This multi-use sporting hub will be equipped with modern facilities to promote physical activity, inclusivity, high performance, and environmental sustainability.
"I thank all the clubs and organisations who engaged with Mayo County Council regarding this application over the past weeks and months.
"Special thanks to David Mellett and the officials of Mayo County Council for their hard work on this €12.2 million application.
"I look forward to a successful outcome once all applications are assessed by the Department.
“This new sports hub promises to be a game-changer for Mayo, enhancing the county's sporting landscape and providing top-tier facilities for athletes and the community.”
