Mayo name team to take on Armagh in All-Ireland quarterfinal

The Mayo team to take on Armagh in the TG4 LGFA All-Ireland Senior Championship quarterfinal at the weekend has been named.

The team shows two changes to the line-up that started against Kildare last time out, with Sinéad Cafferky and Aoife Staunton replacing Fiona McHale and Sinead Walsh in attack.

The Armagh starting team shows three changes in personnel from the last outing as Caroline O’Hanlon, Sarah Quigley and Niamh Reel replace Eve Lavery, Blaithín Mackin and Meabh McCambridge.

Without Aimee Mackin, who was ruled out through injury before throw-in, Armagh fell at the quarterfinal stage against Cork last year.

Fast forward to now and the Orchard County will have to do without their brilliant forward again after she sustained a serious knee injury in the Ulster final victory over Donegal.

Without Mackin, Armagh still managed to navigate the group stages of the All-Ireland series to set up Sunday's home quarterfinal with Mayo (5.45 p.m. in BOX-IT Athletic Grounds, Armagh).

Mayo, meanwhile, bounced back from defeat to Dublin to see off Kildare in their group, thereby booking a place in the last eight.

When Armagh and Mayo met in Division 1 of the Lidl National League this year, Mackin scored 1-7 as they won by 2-9 to 2-8.

This promises to be equally as tight, with Mayo aiming to reach the semi-finals for a fourth successive season.

The Mayo team in full is as follows: L. Brennan; S. Lally, N. O’Malley, K. Sullivan; É. Ronayne, C. Durkan, D. Caldwell; A. Geraghty, E. Murray; F. McLaughlin, A. Gough, S. Cafferky; A. Staunton, M. Cannon, L. Cafferky.

The Armagh team is: A. Carr; G. Ferguson, C. McCambridge, R. Mulligan; C. Towe, L. McConville, D. Coleman; N. Coleman, C. O’Hanlon; E. Druse, A. McCoy, S. Quigley; N. Reel, N. Henderson, K. Mallon.

The other three quarterfinals are down for decision on Saturday, with Cork and Waterford getting proceedings underway at 1.15 p.m., followed by Meath’s visit to Kerry at 5.15 p.m. and Dublin’s home tie with Galway at 7.30 p.m.

Also on Saturday, Laois, Tipperary, Donegal and Kildare will aim to preserve senior championship status for 2025 in relegation qualifiers.
