Successful Labour candidate with strong Mayo roots

Newly elected Labour Party MP for South Derbyshire, Samantha Niblett, has strong Mayo connections on both sides of her family.

Her paternal grandmother, Margaret O'Malley, hailed from Skehanagh, Ballintubber, and her grandfather, Jimmy Doherty, was from Newport.

The couple emigrated to Nottingham in the 1950s, laying the foundation for their granddaughter's impressive journey.

To her daughter and all the girls and women out there, Niblett sent out a powerful message on social media after her election.

“This is just one example of what a Member of Parliament and a woman in tech looks like. I did it. So can you.”

Before embarking on her political career, Samantha had a successful stint in the technology sector.

Her transition into politics has culminated in a historic win for the Labour Party in Derbyshire, a former Conservative stronghold.

The region, which previously had nine Tory MPs to two Labour MPs, has witnessed a significant political shift, with Labour securing all eleven seats from the Conservatives.
