Move to appoint head of Mayo 'safety partnership' as new garda appointments confirmed

Mayo County Council has invited expressions of interest for the position of chairperson of the new local community safety partnership.

The forum, which replaces the former joint policing committee, is being established in line with the Policing, Security and Community Safety Act 2024.

The post of chair is a voluntary one and the selected candidate will be expected to commit for a three-year term.

The closing date for receipt of expressions of interest is Wednesday, July 31, at 5 p.m.

Meanwhile, two new garda superintendents have been appointed to Mayo.

They are Peter Conlon, who takes over the post in the Ballina district, and Deirdre Gill, who will be attached to Claremorris Garda Station but will also serve the Castlebar and Westport districts.

Concerns had been raised at the July meeting of Mayo County Council over the urgent need to fill senior policing figures in the county.
