Zoning contravention agreed to progress Mayo technology centre

A MATERIAL contravention of the county development plan has been agreed by Claremorris-Swinford Municipal District councillors to allow a new technology centre to be built in south Mayo.

The centre, with offices, meeting rooms, digital hub and cafe, is proposed on a site at Clare, Claremorris.

The material contravention is necessary as the lands are zoned agricultural use.

Councillor Richard Finn said the lands are town centre, beside a commercial premises, and the project would have positive implications in terms of employment and bringing Claremorris into the modern age.

That the lands were zoned agricultural was a 'ludicrous' situation, he added.

Councillor Paul Lawless said this was good news for the town, noting the site's town centre location and proximity to the train station, and it would benefit the area.
