The events in Pennsylvania, in which Mr. Trump suffered minor injuries, are set to dominate world media headlines over the coming days as the Republican Party has called for an investigation into the matter.

It will also have a significant impact on the US presidential campaign over the coming months.

A member of Mr. Trump's communications team Margo Martin posted on X (formerly twitter): "Strong and resilient. He will never stop fighting for America."

The FBI has identified 20-year-old Thomas Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the suspect.
