Homes in east Mayo waiting 17 years for sewerage connection

HOMES in Kiltimagh remain without a sewerage connection despite paying for one 17 years ago.

They were to be connected as part of the new Cloonkeadagh estate project, which is moving forward, but that hasn't happened to date.

Councillor Adrian Forkan raised the residents plight at a municipal district meeting.

Under the part 8 planning approval, five residencess opposite the new housing development were to be connected to the sewerage scheme, but it was now being indicated that this won't happen.

If they are to be connected, that should be done before footpaths and other works for the new estate are completed, he told council management.

Is it happening or not, and if not why, he asked.

They were told that under the part 8, it would happen.

Two of the homes, Councillor Forkan continued, had paid for a sewer connection 17 years ago.

If they were to look for their money back, what would it be worth in today's money, he asked, because they haven’t receive a connection to the sewer.

It needs to be looked at and he has made several representations on it.

Councillor Forkan said they had a fantastic new estate for Kiltimagh. It brought people into the town, boosting shops, schools and other local services.

However, something that should be a good news story is turning sour because of something the council should have done.

Councillor Neil Cruise said there is also an ongoing issue in the area with a manhole that blows open after heavy rain, which isn't acceptable.

Municipal head Padraic Flanagan said an update has been sought from the capital section to try and bring about a resolution.
