Illegal dumping at Mayo graveyard condemned

ILLEGAL dumping at Castlebar’s old graveyard has been condemned by the local Tidy Towns voluntary workers who carry out regular clean-ups of the area.

Last week dozens of empty cider cans were discovered dumped on one grave plot.

“I would highly condemn those responsible as it defeats the weekly clean-up by the volunteers,” said Councillor Ger Deere, one of the leading tidy towns campaigners.

He added: “Those responsible must be unaware of the Return Scheme where they can reclaim deposits on their cans.

“It is really disheartening to see such dumping in the graveyard where such great efforts are being made to keep the place tidy and litter-free.”
