A large crowd attended the Ballina Salmon Festival Sports Day during the National Play Day celebrations.

Great celebrations during National Play Day 2024 in Mayo

Mayo County Council and Mayo Sports Partnership were thrilled with the success of this year's National Play Day celebrations, which took place from July 13 to 21.

Embracing the theme 'Time to Play', these events highlighted the essential role of play in the development, creativity, and social skills of children and young people.

The Ballina Salmon Festival Sports Day saw a fantastic turnout of over 200 children and their parents. In collaboration with Ballina Sports Hub, Moy Valley Athletic Club and Ballina Salmon Festival, participants enjoyed a variety of fun athletic activities at the Ballina athletics track.

This inclusive event allowed children to run, jump and throw in a welcoming environment, fostering both physical activity and community spirit.

Pat O’Brien from Ballina Sports Hub remarked: “We are delighted to be part of such an inclusive event. There was lots of laughing and smiles, and sure that’s what it is all about.”

National Play Day continued with exhilarating SUP and kayak sessions on Lough Lannagh in Castlebar, where two groups of teenagers, one from a Direct Provision centre and another from the local area, participated in the activities.

The Junior Kayak Academy, an ongoing programme running until September, provided a thrilling experience for the kayaking group. Meanwhile, the teenage girls trying SUP for the first time had an unforgettable adventure, leading to requests for more sessions.

With 18 youths and their parents on the water, the event was filled with laughter and positive energy, showcasing the spirit of National Play Day. This event was made possible through the collaboration with Castlebar Outdoor Sports Hub and Canoeing Ireland.

Also in Castlebar, Chime Fun Day was held in the Castlebar Mitchels GAA Club hub. The celebration culminated in a delightful event organised in partnership with Chime. It featured a host of activities, including face-painting, yoga sessions and rugby drills, all under the bright summer sun.

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the arrival of an ice cream truck, bringing smiles to the faces of all attendees.

Yoga teacher Edel Reilly, Nigel Naughton from the FAI and Simon O'Malley from Connacht Rugby contributed to the day’s success, ensuring that every child had an opportunity to participate and enjoy.

Chime, celebrating its 60th anniversary, continues to support deaf and hard of hearing people in Ireland, and their involvement in National Play Day exemplified their commitment to inclusivity.

Ray McNamara, sports inclusion development officer at Mayo Sports Partnership, expressed his gratitude, stating: “Thank you to all organisers, partners and volunteers at all events, and of course a huge thank you to all our wonderful kids who came along to celebrate National Play Day 2024, making it a great fun day for all.”
