Mayo glamping pods project refused on appeal

A PROPOSED glamping pod development in north Mayo has been refused permission by An Bord Pleanála.

This overturns a decision of Mayo County Council, which had given the five-pod project in Carrowmore-Lacken the green light.

Three parties appealed the council's decision. Their concerns included traffic hazard, noise, impact on wildlife and visual amenity, and the lack of facilities nearby such as shops, pubs and restaurants.

An appeals inspector, in a report, recommended planning permission be refused, which the board agreed with.

It found the development, on a site removed from services including retail and social facilities, did not comply with policy in the county development plan.

It would contribute to the encroachment of random rural development in the area and be contrary to development plan policy on siting of glamping accommodation.

The development would be contrary to the proper planning and sustainable development of the area.
