Anger over Mayo town centre speeding incident which left family pet injured

An appeal for witnesses has been issued after a dog was knocked down at Newtown traffic lights in Castlebar while out walking with its owner.

The family pet was "mauled by a car at speed' after stepping off the footpath to cross the road.

The driver of the car pressed its brakes but failed to stop.

The dog is receiving treatment for its injuries.

Now an appeal has been issued to anybody who witnessed the incident to come forward by contacting the local garda station.

The incident has been described on social media as 'horrific' and 'awful'.
