Reek Sunday pilgrims enjoying ideal climbing conditions

Reek Sunday pilgrims are enjoying perfect climbing conditions on Croagh Patrick today.

The weather could not be better as thousands of people from throughout the country and further afield take part in the annual event.

There has been a big early turnout due to the fact that many pilgrims wish to be back home in time to view the All-Ireland SFC final between Galway and Armagh this afternoon.

Speaking at 8 a.m. Mass at St. Patrick's Oratory at the summit of the mountain, Fr. John Kenny, Adm., Westport, referenced the lovely weather.

"Thank you very much to the person who put out the Child of Prague statue," he remarked, drawing laughter from the attendance.

His first task was to light a candle in honour of grandparents and the elderly, for whom today's pilgrimage is celebrated.

The Catholic Communications Office has warned that the event is “a physically demanding pilgrimage."

Pilgrims should also heed the instructions of stewards, the mountain rescue teams, Order of Malta and gardaí.

This year, a new pathway running from the base to the summit of the mountain has been full completed from foot to summit after a three year project.

The project, which was completed by hand, involved the removal of thousands of tonnes of rock and soil to make the area more accessible.

It is four kilometres long and is addressing serious erosion issues that had arising on the mountain over recent years.

While the purpose of the path is not specifically safety based, it will help those making the pilgrimage.

Medical tents have been set up at the Reek, including one on the shoulder of the mountain.

Members of the Mayo Mountain Rescue Team are being assisted this year by volunteers from the Dublin-Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team, and the Calder Valley Search & Rescue Team, Mytholmroyd, England.

A spokesperson for the Mayo team said: "We wish all who climb Croagh Patrick a very safe and enjoyable day. If you need our assistance, we'll be there to help you."

First aid assistance is being provided by members of Westport Order of Malta, joined by other others from across the county and region.

There is plenty of parking available at the location and those arriving by car are advised to follow the directions of stewards.

The weather is expected to remain dry for the day.
