Bright and breezy August bank holiday weekend for Mayo

We can look forward to a bright and sunny Saturday with only a scattering of showers, according to the latest forecast.

Take a look below at what the weather has in store.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 3

Temperatures will reach highs of 16 to 18 degrees Celsius, accompanied by mostly moderate southwest to west winds, which will be fresher at times along the western coastal areas.

The forecast indicates significant weather changes as the weekend progresses, with heavy rain and localised flooding expected from Sunday into Bank Holiday Monday.

A humid, moisture-laden airmass will move over the country, leading to impactful weather conditions.

The rest of the week will see more average temperatures and a mix of showers and dry spells with occasional sunshine.

SATURDAY NIGHT

Expect a largely dry evening with clear spells initially, though clouds will thicken from the west, bringing light rain and drizzle overnight.

Temperatures will drop to between 10 to 14 degrees, with light to moderate southwest winds, becoming moderate to fresh along the west coast.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 4

Sunday morning may see some bright spells in the east and south, but generally, it will be cloudy with light rain and drizzle in some areas. However, heavy and persistent rain will hit the west coast by early afternoon, spreading throughout the region. Localized flooding is a possibility, especially in Connacht and possibly west Munster. Temperatures will range from 16 to 20 degrees, with blustery, fresh, and gusty southerly winds, stronger along the west and south coasts.

SUNDAY NIGHT

Very heavy rain, possibly thundery, will continue into Sunday night, maintaining the risk of flooding. A clearance may begin in the northwest and west later in the night. Temperatures will remain humid, ranging from 13 to 17 degrees, with fresh to strong gusty southerly winds easing overnight.

AUGUST BANK HOLIDAY MONDAY

Monday morning will start mostly cloudy with further heavy, possibly thundery rain, particularly across the midlands, east, and south east.

Although there is some uncertainty regarding the timing of the clearance, it is expected to spread from the north west and west in the early morning to most regions by afternoon. However, the rain may persist in the east and south for much of the day.

The temperatures will range from 18 to 22 degrees, with moderate to occasionally fresh south west winds veering westerly.

MONDAY NIGHT

Any lingering rain in the east and south will clear overnight, leaving clear spells and scattered showers, mainly in the north and west.

It will be much fresher, with temperatures dropping to between 9 and 11 degrees in light to moderate west to south west breezes, slightly stronger in the north west.
