Hollywood comes to north Mayo

HOLLYWOOD has come to north Mayo.

Renowned actor and filmmaker Edward Burns, best known for his role as Private Richard Reiben in Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan, is back in Ireland 26 years later to direct his new film, Finnegan’s Foursome, with filming taking place at Carne Golf Links.

This highly anticipated film tells the tale of two middle-aged brothers and their respective sons, who travel to Ireland for the Finnegan family’s annual golf outing, during which they distribute the ashes of the family patriarch.

Picturesque Carne Golf Links in Belmullet serves as the stunning backdrop for this heartfelt story.

Burns has visited the Mayo location several times this year, praising Carne as the 'most glorious course in Ireland'. The production is being handled by Marlboro Road Gang Productions, who are currently busy shooting scenes on the famous links.

This is the second major film production to take place in the region in recent years featuring star-studded lineups and exploring the beauty of Belmullet. Previously, actors Aidan Quinn (Benny and Joon, Legends of the Fall) and Dominic Cooper (Mama Mia) filmed scenes at Ballyglass Lighthouse for their upcoming movie, Cry from the Sea.

Films such as Wild Mountain Thyme, Banshees of Inisherin, My Sailor, My Love, and the recently released Irish Wish, starring Lindsay Lohan, have further established the region’s presence on the global stage.

The acclaimed Irish film Prospect House, directed by the renowned Paul Mercier, recently premiered, featuring Enniscoe House and set against the picturesque backdrop of Nephin and Lough Conn. This film won the Best New Irish Feature award at the Cork Film Festival.

The rising trend of Hollywood choosing north Mayo as a filming destination highlights the area’s natural beauty and its cinematic appeal.

Mairead Melody Carr, manager of Mayo North Tourism, shared her thoughts on the impact of such films on local tourism: “It’s wonderful to see the beauty of Erris showcased to the world. The increasing demand for north Mayo as a film destination is a fantastic boost for local tourism, bringing international attention and visitors to our stunning landscapes and unique locations.”

As the cameras roll at Carne Golf Links, excitement builds for the release of Finnegan’s Foursome. Local residents and golf enthusiasts alike cannot wait to see their beloved course on the silver screen, shining a spotlight on the charm and allure of North Mayo.
