Mayo-born broadcaster Adrian Flannelly will be laid to rest in Wicklow

THE funeral of Mayo-born broadcaster Adrian Flannelly, renowned as ‘The Voice of the Irish’ in the United States for more than half a century, will take place in Co. Wicklow tomorrow (Saturday) week (August 10).

At its peak, The Adrian Flannelly Show on the Irish Radio Network reached more than two million listeners.

Adrian Flannelly was born in Attymass in 1942. He moved to New York aged 17 in 1959.

Mr. Flannelly played a key role in Irish community efforts to secure Morrison and Donnelly visas for the undocumented Irish in the late 1980s and early '90s.

He also helped with the development of the Irish Famine Memorial in Lower Manhattan.

He received an Irish Presidential Distinguished Service Award in 2021 for his work on behalf of the Irish community in the US.

Mr. Flannelly died at North Shore University Hospital in New York on July 24.

His funeral Mass will take place at 11 a.m. on August 10 in St. Peter's Church, Bray, Co. Wicklow, followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery.

Mr. Flannelly is survived by his wife Aine, son Paul and daughters Linda, Eileen and Kathleen, as well as a number of grandchildren and extended family.
