Rural Mayo residents left without bin service

POTENTIAL customers in rural parts of west Mayo are being left without a refuse collection service.

The plight of people living in some rural parts of Westport not having bins was highlighted by local Councillor Johnny O'Malley at a Westport-Bemullet Municipal District meeting.

“No one wants to go out to collect them,” he stated.

One woman he knew of takes her rubbish to the dump in Newport.

People are interested and willing to pay and they were entitled to have their bins collected, he said.

“Anyone who gets a licence to collect rubbish should serve all the people,” added Councillor O'Malley.

The point was made by Councillor Chris Maxwell that the oil trucks can go up the roads so he couldn't see why a bin lorry can't also.

“It is essential in this day and age that the bin trucks go to these places,” said Councillor Maxwell.

Erris-based Councillor Sean Carey said he knew where a refuse truck won't go into a village as they said the road wasn't fit. Yet other concrete trucks and lorries can do so.

He knew of one woman who brings her rubbish to her daughter's 40 miles away.

The matter is to be raised with the council's environment section.
