The old military barracks in Castlebar has been suggested as the best location to host a circus or funfair.

Councillors unhappy with circus location in Mayo county town

By Conor Curran

THE military barracks should be the host venue when the circus or funfairs visit Castlebar.

As a circus again rolls into Castlebar, its location on the outskirts of the town has been criticised by members of the Castlebar Municipal District.

The site, on private lands at Milebush, is not suitable, Councillor Cyril Burke told a municipal meeting and local residents are concerned.

Councillor Ger Deere said to allow a circus or carnival there was 'crazy' and he proposed they 'never be allowed out there again'. He then proposed the military barracks as an alternative and suitable location, citing the yearly success of Horror in the Barracks.

Other councillors agreed, with Councillor Blackie Gavin saying it’s 'past time' that a new location was identified, and that it would be 'great to see people using the barracks'. The military barracks is under the ownership of Mayo County Council and the grounds have hosted funfairs in the past.

Councillor Michael Kilcoyne requested a report on suitable sites.
