Mayo athlete makes Ireland team for World Under 20 Championships

Oisín Joyce of Ballinrobe-based Lake District AC has been named on the Irish team for the upcoming World Under 20 Championships, which take place in Peru from August 27 to 31.

Joyce goes into the championships ranked sixth in javelin. He heads to Peru in superb form, having posted a personal best of 73.72m back in June, which places him fourth on the Irish all-time list.

The Lake District AC man is one of two field event athletes ranked inside the top six. The other is Elizabeth Ndudi of Dundrum South Dublin AC, who is ranked third in the long jump. She is the European Under 20 long jump champion. That was Ireland’s first field event gold medal in the 53-year history of the European Under 20 Championships.

Meanwhile, yet another set of Irish relay teams are set to take to championship action in the form of the mixed 4 x 400m and the men’s 4 x 400m.

In fact, Ireland will be well represented across the sprint events, with Tallaght’s Sean Aigboboh set to take his place in the 100m, while Sean Doggett (Athenry AC) will look to use his recent European Senior Championships experience when he takes to the 400m and relay.

Fintan Dewhirst (Tir Chonaill AC), a 2022 European Under 18 silver medallist, will lead Ireland out in the 400m hurdles alongside David Davitt (Clonliffee Harriers), with both athletes also selected on relay teams.

Also selected on the relay teams are Niamh Murray (Bray Runners), Daisy Walker (Monaghan Phoenix), Amy Jo Kierans (Oriel AC), Conor Kelly (Derry Track), Adam Courtney (Ballymena and Antrim) and Stephen Mannion (South Galway AC).

Finally, Lughaidh Mallon (Lagan Valley AC) and Jonas Stafford (UCD AC) look set to compete in the 1,500m and 3,000m respectively.
