Swift action by gardaí and local businesses recovers €2,500 for Mayo woman

THE prompt response of garda detectives, vigilant bank staff and a local chemist shop in Castlebar led to the recovery of €2,500, stolen from a woman this morning (Tuesday).

The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, recounted her ordeal to The Connaught Telegraph.

She had visited the TSB bank on Ellison Street at around 11 a.m. to withdraw the cash, which staff placed in an envelope and handed to her. However, upon leaving the bank and going to another premises, she noticed the envelope was missing from her handbag.

She alerted bank staff, the gardaí and nearby shop owners and her swift action and the cooperation of the community were crucial in resolving the situation.

The woman expressed immense gratitude to everyone who assisted her, particularly praising businesses who provided CCTV footage.

From the information provided on appearance and the movements of those allegedly involved, gardaí subsequently arrested two people in another part of the county this afternoon in connection with the matter.

The injured party, who is not elderly, emphasised the importance of vigilance when carrying cash.
