Mayo county town mourns passing of Peter Gavin

The death of Peter Gavin, Meadow Grove, Ballybane, Galway, and formerly of Castlebar, is widely mourned in Mayo.

Peter died peacefully at the Galway Hospice with all his family by his side.

Peter was for many years a member of the clerical staff of Castlebar Bacon Company before joining the administrative staff of W.P. Higgins Ltd., main Ford dealers, in Galway.

He was a former secretary of Breaffy GAA Club, with whom he also played football.

The deceased also contributed largely to the social life of Castlebar.

He was stage manager for many local productions, including annual musicals and pantomimes.

He was also an officer in the local Order of Malta Unit.

Predeceased by his wife Mary (née Walshe), parents James and Bridget, sister Margo and brother Michael, he is deeply loved and mourned by his daughters Fiona, Lorraine, Corinna and Aoife, sister Angela, sons-in-law Aengus, Tim, and Brian and very precious grandchildren Damon, Saffie and Grace, who will miss him greatly.

He is also fondly remembered by his brothers-in-law Tommy, Ollie and John, sister in-law Ann, nieces, nephews, extended family, lovely friends and neighbours.

Deepest sympathy is extended to the bereaved family on their loss.

His remains will be reposing at the Holy Family Funeral Parlour, Mervue, today (Tuesday) from 5 to 6.30 p.m.

Requiem Mass takes place in the Church of the Holy Family, Mervue, on Wednesday at 11 a.m.

Peter will be laid to rest afterwards with his wife Mary in the family plot in Bohermore Cemetery.

May his gentle soul rest in peace.
