Two people rescued after being stranded on Mayo lake island

Two people have been rescued after their boat got into difficulties at Lough Carra.

The Corrib Mask Search and Rescue service has revealed that it was contacted by the Gardai and Coast Guard to respond to a 999 call on the lake last Sunday night.

A boat had got into difficulty and was stranded on an island.

The search and rescue crew proceeded to launch on Lough Carra using its zodiac inflatable from Tourmakeady.

A spokesperson elaborated: "The crew headed out late at night to the last known location and were able to quickly locate the vessel.

"Two people were safely transported back to shore and given a first aid assessment.

"This is a good opportunity to remind all water users to always have a means of communication with you and always wear a properly fitted lifejacket.

"Don’t hesitate to call early when things start to go wrong. Call 999 or 112 and ask for The Coast Guard who will dispatch the necessary services to help you.

"Many thanks as always to all the crew who responded late on a Sunday night and all who contributed to the fast response and good outcome."
