Mayo's much-travelled Elaine set for big swimming challenge

Mayo's Elaine Heneghan is preparing for the challenge of swimming from Roonagh to Clare Island on Saturday, August 31, while raising funds for Cystic Fibrosis Ireland and Order of Malta.

The Breaffy native, now living in Castlebar with her Kiwi partner Rob Holloway, was disappointed with the swim being initially postponed but she’s happy that the safety of the participants is to the fore and the new date is set.

“It’s been a lovely experience, meeting new people. The camaraderie of training together and working towards a common goal is really enjoyable,” she said.

In her 40 years on earth, Elaine has lived life to the full,

She has backpacked in Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Colombia, New Zealand and Australia.

She lived in New Zealand for five years where she met her partner Rob who is an ultra marathoner.

They’re just back from attending the Olympics in Paris. She has hiked in Connemara, Nephin Beag, The Kerry Way, The Western Way and The Dolomites in Italy.

This civil engineer said she likes a challenge, likes the outdoors, likes water sports, and likes travelling.

“Not so long ago, I’d have thought that I couldn’t do this 5.3 KM swim, but with encouragement and camaraderie and training I have confidence now,” she stated.

Her experience with the Castlebar Triathlon Club developed the self belief.

“I’m looking forward to it, and they are two really great causes, Cystic Fibrosis Ireland and Order of Malta Louisburgh,” she said.

She is taking on the challenge knowing she has the support of many, including her partner Rob, and their cat: Shadow.

And after the Roonagh to Clare Island Swim – she might take on the Maumturks!

The organisers are hoping that supporters will come out on the day to celebrate and contribute in any way.

Donations can be made through the iDonate page.

People can show support by donating online and also coming out on the day to cheer the swimmers ashore in Clare Island and celebrate.

People will congregate in the centre on Clare Island after the swim.
