Mary Coughlan.

A musically epic autumn planned for Mayo arts centre

Among an illustrious schedule of live music performances at the Linenhall Arts Centre this Autumn, is that of Irish music legend ‘Mary Coughlan’ on Thursday, October 3.

In a career fast approaching its 40th year, Mary is regaled for her soulful voice and deep, emotional storytelling, having captivated audiences worldwide with her unique blend of jazz, blues, and folk.

An unforgettable evening of music and storytelling awaits, with whom Hotpress has described as “one of our most openly raw performers".

This intimate gig offers a rare opportunity to experience one of Ireland's most adored voices up close, in the heart of Castlebar. Accompanying Mary on stage will be Johnny Taylor (Piano), Barry Donoghue (Double Bass) and Dominic Mullan (Drums).

Following the Linenhall’s specially curated celebration of the ‘Brose Walsh’ band, which included two sold out shows in 2023, a memorable night of entertainment ensues on their return, for an exclusive concert on Friday, September 13.

One of Ireland’s longest established dance bands, the iconic Brose Walsh band boasts an unbroken family legacy.

Over 86 years, three generations and hundreds of gigs globally, it is synonymous with the dance band and showband eras in Ireland, and of immense cultural significance to Co. Mayo.

Next up, on Thursday, September 26, is yet another legendary music collective, the acoustic, multi-instrumentalist quartet, ‘Jargon’.

Charlie McGettigan, Eurovision winner with 'Rock’n’Roll Kids', initially established the group in 1973, reforming fifty years later to its current ensemble of band members: Gerry Grennan, Liam Gilmartin and Brian Mulligan.

Featuring rich three and four-part harmonies, their interpretations and original songs in Ragtime, Blues, Folk and Bluegrass styles will be revisited.

Admired musicians individually and collectively, Gerry Grennan has played with the likes of Christy Moore, Dolores Keane and Eleanor Shanley and now with new member Brian Mulligan, as part of ‘The Old Market St Swing Band’s’ Friday evening residency in Thomas Connolly’s, Sligo. Liam Gilmartin also joined forces with Grennan for the very successful and much lamented ‘Hennigan’s Blooze Band’.

Additional performance and event highlights include: theatrical high jinks in one act comedy play ‘Count To Ten’, on Thursday, September 12; ‘Let’s Talk Publishing’ on Wednesday, September 18 with Mayo authors Anne Walsh Donnelly, Fiona Wilde and Fiona Neary; an open house programme of five ensembles on Friday, September 20 when ‘Music West Presents Culture Night’; and ‘First Quarter: An Evening of Conversation, Reading and Song’, celebrating John Tuomey’s published, First Quarter on Friday, September 27th.
