Contractor appointed to start upgrade works on Mayo bus stops

DESIGN work and tender for eight bus stops has been completed by the Castlebar Municipal District at four locations: Killawalla, Balla, Ballyvary and Straide.

The contractor has been appointed and is expected to commence work in the coming weeks.

Councillor Harry Barrett has called on Mayo County Council to begin the process of identifying a site for a proper bus station in Castlebar.

The current site on Stephen Garvey Way is unsuitable, he said, asking in a motion that all stakeholders be alerted to engage in the process and submissions relating to their requirements and responsibilities so the project can be advanced.

The council, he said, needs to be engaging with stakeholders to find a proper bus station for the town.

Councillor Michael Kilcoyne commented that the Stephen Garvey Way facility was the only bus stop that he knew of that's located on the side of a hill.
