Mayo County Council's yard at Moneen, Castlebar

Reason for new Mayo brine saturation station explained

A NEW brine saturation station for the production of salt brine will result in an improved process for salting Mayo's roads under the council's winter maintenance programme.

A Part 8 planning application for the plant, which is to be located at Mayo County Council's yard at Moneen, Castlebar, has been approved by municipal district councillors.

Elected members were told that with traditional salt spreading, on a dry, windy night some can get blown away and it is not as effective.

With the brine treatment, it sticks better and there is a 30% saving in the total amount of salt required.

The project is funded by Transport Infrastructure Ireland and it will see a better end result on the roads whilst using less salt.

The council is also considering having a similar facility in the east of the county.
