Mayo football championship first round summary across all tiers

The Mayo football championship has kicked off, and the first round delivered plenty of excitement across the senior, intermediate, and junior levels.

In the senior championship, Charlestown Sarsfields pulled off the surprise of the round by securing a last-gasp equaliser against Castlebar Mitchels, despite the recent league champions being reduced to 14 men after a red card for Neil Douglas.

Elsewhere, Garrymore comfortably overcame Ballyhaunis by nine points, while Balla pushed Westport all the way before narrowly falling short by two points.

It was all square between Aghamore and Ballintubber while defending champions Ballina Stephenites laid down a marker with a high-scoring win over newcomers Mayo Gaels, reaffirming their status as favourites to reclaim the Moclair Cup this season.
