Three-in-a-row for Mayo athletics star Hugh Armstrong

THERE looks little danger of Mayo man Hugh Armstrong being late for his wedding next weekend after he demonstrated blistering pace once again in his third consecutive victory of the Irish Life Dublin Race Series.

The Ballina AC star won the Frank Duffy 10 Mile in the Phoenix Park in 49 minutes and 27 seconds, just 11 seconds short of the course record, to maintain his unbeaten status in this year’s series.

Armstrong used the race as a training session for the Irish Life Dublin Marathon on October 27.

“I’m into the final block of training now. I did 20 miles last weekend and that was kind of a marathon session there today,” he said after burning off the opposition by the fourth mile and coming through half-way in 24:38.

Rathoath’s runner-up Peter Somba was two and a half minutes behind him in 52 minutes flat and David Glynn, last year’s race winner, took third in 52:06.

The next race in the series is the sold out Irish Life Dublin Half Marathon, on Saturday, September 22.

A transfer window for entrants has been offered for the first time, which opened on Wednesday, July 24 and will close on Saturday, August 24.

This opportunity provides an additional chance for those who missed out initially to secure a spot in the highly anticipated half marathon.
