Appeal for greater investment in Mayo county town infrastructure

A Mayo Oireachtas member has called for a fund to be established to assist large towns such as Castlebar implement their town plan.

Senator Lisa Chambers said such a fund would facilitate greater investment in much-needed infrastructure, such as affordable housing and increased transport connections.

She was speaking after meeting with the Castlebar Chamber of Commerce, representatives from across the business sector in the town and her party colleague, the Minister for Finance, Jack Chambers.

She said: “The potential of Castlebar is clear.

“As the county town of Mayo, a significant level of economic potential can be unlocked with the appropriate level of investment in infrastructure in the town and increased resources from the IDA allocated to attracting new industry.

“The need for more affordable housing units and increased rail connections was highlighted during a meeting with Minister Chambers, the Castlebar Chamber of Commerce and business representatives from the town.

“Ahead of the Budget, we discussed how a dedicated fund to assist large towns like Castlebar implement their town plans could be a game changer in terms of unlocking economic potential.

“There is significant economic potential that can be unlocked in the town, if the town plan can be fully implemented and further affordable housing and increased rail connections developed.

“I welcome the confirmation from the minister that he will consider the establishment of such a fund and know that he will do all he can to help our large towns prosper.”
