Mayo tribute to international walker Bert on his passing

The organisers of Castlebar International Four Days Walks have paid tribute to Bert Odekerken on his death in The Netherlands.

Bert had been an annual participant in the walks. with beloved wife Els, over the past 27 years.

The tribute stated: "He always had a smile on his face, always up for the laugh, always ready to pronounce “Mayo For Sam” with a twinkle in his eye, and always lovable.

"He was an experienced rambler and was one of the leaders on our rambles for many years. He loved it. He was always on hand to help.

"Through his business Jagotravel, he brought so many walkers to Castlebar since his first trip. He brought them all over the world too.

"Little did we know when we shared a pint with him in Johnny’s earlier this year that this would be the last conversation we’d have. He spoke about Els and he was so proud that she was to receive her award from the IML for 450 walks.

"To Els, we send our love from Castlebar. In these difficult days, remember you are in our prayers and Bert will always have a special place in the hearts of Castlebar International Four Days walkers."

May his gentle soul rest in peace.
