Highest rainfall recorded in Mayo last month

THE highest rainfall in the country last month was recorded at a Mayo weather station.

Some 257.5mm of rain fell during August in Newport - its wettest August since 1985.

The wettest day occurred on Sunday, August 4, when 34.6mm of rain was recorded at the weather station.

Other parts of the county were similarly soggy, according to the August climate statement issued by Met Éireann.

Percentage Long-Term Average (LTA) rainfall values included 204% (monthly rainfall total of 208.1 mm) at Belmullet. This was its wettest August since 1992.

The 257.5 mm recorded in Newport was 194% of its LTA (its second wettest August on record and wettest since 1985).

Two stations had their wettest August on record - Malin Head in Co. Donegal with 181.3 mm (record length 69 years) and Knock Airport, with 215.4 mm (record length 28 years).
