Mayo independent categorically denies Fine Gael election approach

Mayo Independent Councillor Mark Duffy has categorically denied speculation that he has been approached to stand for Fine Gael in the next general election.

Speaking to The Connaught Telegraph, he stated: "I don't know where the rumours are coming from, but they are totally inaccurate. Fine Gael has not made contact with me whatsoever.

"I have not made any decision in regard to the forthcoming general election. And if and when I do so, I will be standing as an independent.

"I am flattered that people are approaching me in the street and asking me when I am going to declare.

"I have not reached any decision at this point and that's the accurate position."

Political observers in the county are bemused over the fact that two nominees from the Ballina area - former senator and TD Michelle Mulherin and Councillor John O'Hara - have been submitted to contest the Fine Gael selection convention on September 15.

They interpreted this move as a protest by the organisation in Ballina following claims that Duffy had been approached by the party to run for Fine Gael ahead of them.

However, this interpretation of the situation has now been shown to be unfounded by Duffy's statement.

It remains to be seen, nevertheless, whether or not Mulherin or O'Hara - or both - withdraw from the race ahead of the convention.
