Green light for long-awaited east Mayo community water connection

Minister of State and local Mayo TD Alan Dillon has announced the approval of additional funding amounting to €617,362 for the completion of the community water connection project in Clearagh, Kiltimagh.

This funding, confirmed by Minister Darragh O’Brien, will enable Mayo local authority to finalise the project, which began in 2019 under the department’s Multi-annual Rural Water Programme (MARWP).

The project, which has faced numerous challenges and delays, will now move forward to provide safe and reliable water to the community.

The completion of this project will be is a significant milestone for the 31 households in the area, ensuring a sustainable and secure water supply.

Minister Alan Dillon stated: “I am delighted to receive confirmation of this additional funding.

"This project is crucial for the community of Clearagh/Lisduff, providing them with a reliable water supply and supporting sustainable development in the area.”

The MARWP aims to address infrastructure deficits impacting the provision of safe drinking water across rural Ireland.

The additional funding was requested by Mayo local authority in May 2024, highlighting the increased costs and scope changes since the project’s inception.

Minister Dillon added: “The challenges faced during this project have been significant, but the commitment from all stakeholders, including Mayo local authority and Uisce Éireann, has been unwavering.

"This funding ensures that we can overcome these obstacles and deliver on our promise to the community.”

The department has worked closely with Mayo local authority and Uisce Éireann to minimise costs, ensuring the project remains viable.

Despite these efforts, individual households will be required to contribute to the overall costs, although the Department will cover 90% of the total expenses.

Minister Dillon concluded: “The completion of the Community Water Connection in Clearagh / Lisduff will not only benefit current residents but also pave the way for future development in the area.

"I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to the community group and residents of Clearagh and Lisduff for their campaigning, patience and cooperation which has been invaluable in bringing this project to fruition”.

The news has also been welcomed by Minister of State Dara Calleary and Councillor Adrian Forkan.
