Geesala home to Mayo's first boutique wine estate

THE first open-air outdoor vineyard in Mayo has been established in Geesala.

It is planned to bottle the first wines from the Temerity vineyard by 2026/27.

Brian and Orla (McConnon) Bakeberg, accomplished entrepreneurs, business partners, and both published authors, are behind the project.

They made a bold decision in 2022 to relocate their global business, An Even Better Place to Work Limited, a recognised leader in employee engagement and wellness programme industry, to County Mayo.

Since moving, their business has received numerous accolades, including a Global Recognition Award for employee engagement software in New York, the European CEO of the Year Awards 2024 Most Visionary Employee Engagement Company bp2w® CEO 2024, a Creative Professional Award in the Network Ireland Mayo category, and, more recently, Best Employee Engagement Company 2024 - Republic of Ireland in the Corporate Vision Global Business Awards 2024.

Their accreditation programme has gained momentum across Ireland and they are eager to support businesses in their home county Mayo and nationally.

They chose the village of Geesala (Gaoth Sáile), aptly translated as 'Salt Wind', renowned for its annual horse racing event on Doolough Beach and boasting a rich cultural history, having served as the backdrop for John Millington Synge's masterpiece, The Playboy of the Western World. In recent years, Geesala has also gained recognition for its boxing club, which has produced numerous high-calibre boxers, including world champions and Olympic medallists.

In this vibrant setting, the Bakebergs have started the first open-air outdoor vineyard in Ireland's west, aptly named Temerity, which embodies the boldness and confidence necessary to thrive in a challenging environment.

Over the past 18 months, they have successfully cultivated more than 250 Zweigelt vines, a grape variety known for its cultivation difficulties and originating from Austria. Their success against the odds resonates with the name Zweigelt, which translates to 'doubts' or 'doubtful', reflecting both the challenges of winemaking and the courage of the winemakers.

WINEMAKING JOURNEY

Zweigelt grapes are distinguished by their unique flavour profile, combining characteristics from its parent varieties, St. Laurent and Blaufränkisch. Cultivating these grapes outside their native Austria presents significant challenges, including the need for climate adaptation, suitable soil conditions, and resistance to diseases.

Brian's success in establishing a vineyard in the Irish climate is a testament to his determination and innovative spirit, capturing the essence of 'temerity' in his winemaking approach.

In addition to the vineyard, Brian has planted avocado and fig trees, which are reportedly thriving.

His entrepreneurial journey is recorded in his book, Sailing the Storm of Logic, where he shares insights on overcoming adversity and achieving personal fulfilment. The book emphasises the importance of embracing one’s unique logic to navigate life’s challenges, urging readers to defy societal norms and pursue their passions. Brian’s philosophy is rooted in the belief that everything is attainable if one is willing to challenge conventional thinking.

Looking ahead, the Bakebergs plan to bottle their first wines by 2026/27, marking a significant milestone in their winemaking journey. All going well there is facility to cultivate a further 500 vines in the future.

Their preparations have been well-received by the community, and they hope to contribute to the local economy while promoting the distinct flavours of their Irish wine. Ultimately promoting a cooperative environment in the community where others can cultivate and supply the grapes for wine production.

This foray into winemaking not only showcases their entrepreneurial spirit but also highlights the potential for innovative agricultural practices in Ireland. Their story serves as an inspiration for those aspiring to pursue their dreams against all odds.

ZWEIGELT GRAPES

Zweigelt grapes are celebrated for their rich, fruity flavours, often showcasing notes of cherry and plum, complemented by hints of spice. The Bakebergs recognised the opportunity to introduce a distinctive wine to the Irish market, featuring a variety that is not to date produced outside of Austria.

Brian's interest in the story behind the grape may stem from his appreciation for Austrian wine culture during his visit to Austria back in 2014. By cultivating Zweigelt, he connects his new venture in Ireland with a rich tradition of winemaking, thereby enhancing the narrative of the vineyard.

In Sailing the Storm of Logic, Brian emphasises the importance of embracing one’s unique logic and pursuing what seems impossible. This philosophy resonates with his decision to plant Zweigelt, as it embodies his belief that with determination and creativity, success is achievable even in the face of adversity.

Brian incorporates local Irish elements into his winemaking in several meaningful ways, blending his innovative approach with the rich cultural and agricultural heritage of County Mayo.

Both John Millington Synge's The Playboy of the Western World, written a few metres away from the vineyard, and Brian's personal journey in Sailing the Storm of Logic share a profound exploration of identity and self-discovery against the backdrop of societal expectations. In Synge's play, protagonist Christy Mahon experiences a transformative journey, gaining confidence and redefining his identity through the perceptions of the rural community around him. Similarly, Bakeberg's narrative chronicles his quest for personal fulfilment and authenticity as he navigates the challenges of entrepreneurship and winemaking in Geesala.

Both stories emphasise the importance of resilience in the face of adversity, as Christy must confront the judgments of others while Bakeberg challenges conventional norms to carve out his unique path. This parallel not only enriches Bakeberg's winemaking narrative but also highlights the enduring themes of self-empowerment and the quest for belonging that resonate deeply within Irish culture. By intertwining these narratives, Bakeberg creates a compelling story that celebrates the spirit of individuality and the transformative power of embracing one’s true self.

Through his incorporation of local resources, cultural heritage, community engagement, sustainable practices, and a philosophy of possibility, Brian successfully weaves Irish elements into his winemaking. This not only enhances the uniqueness of his vineyard but also fosters a deeper connection between his wines and the rich traditions of Mayo.

The Bakebergs selection of Zweigelt for their vineyard reflects their adventurous spirit, commitment to innovation, and desire to challenge the status quo. By cultivating this demanding grape variety, they aim not only to produce exceptional wine but also to inspire others to pursue their dreams and live their adventure against all odds.
