Significant works underway at Mayo hospital 'crucial for future'

A Mayo Oireachtas member has welcomes site clearance works beginning for new emergency department at Mayo University Hospital

Stated Senator Lisa Chambers: "The contractors are on site and are already working on a new 40 space car park which is much needed.

"They are also beginning site clearance works on the site where the emergency department extension will be built.

Seeing construction activity at the hospital is a very welcome sight.

"We have been talking about this extension to the emergency department for a number of years and now it is finally happening.

"This government has delivered on its commitment to the people of Mayo to invest in health facilities in the county and expand capacity at the emergency department.

"This comes on top of the recent announcement to add an additional 96 beds at Mayo University Hospital, to be delivered over the next seven years, a 36% increase in bed capacity at the hospital.

"We have a growing and ageing population so investment in health services and health facilities is absolutely crucial to ensure we can deliver the best possible healthcare for our citizens."
