Tributes to much-loved Mayo personality on his passing

The death of Thomas (Tommy Joe) Walsh, Curlisduane, Ballyglass, Claremorris, has evoked a sense of tremendous loss in the community.

He died peacefully in the wonderful care of the staff at Mayo University Hospital after a short illness bravely and patiently fought.

A founder member of Ballyglass Football Club, he was deeply involved in the local community, always striving to make it better.

Many warm tributes are paid to him on social media where he is described 'a true gentleman.'

In a tribute, John Boyle, chairperson, Ballyglass F.C., stated: "With heavy hearts, we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of our beloved friend and co-founder, Tommy Joe Walsh.

"From that memorable day in 1975 when he proudly took to the field in the club’s first-ever game, Tommy Joe’s dedication to Ballyglass F.C. never wavered.

"His love for the club was palpable—whether he was cheering on our senior teams or, in more recent years, watching his grandson Cian play.

"Ballyglass was more than just a football club to Tommy Joe, it was part of him.

"Always there with a kind word, sage advice, or ready hands to help, he tirelessly worked to ensure the club’s success and well-being.

"Even in his later years, he cared deeply for Ballyglass F.C., always offering his support in any way he could, motivated by a love that never dimmed.

"Our deepest sympathies go out to his wife Joan, his daughter Aideen, his son Bryan, and his cherished grandson Cian.

"Tommy Joe’s presence, his warmth and his passion will be profoundly missed by all who had the honour of knowing him at Ballyglass F.C."

Predeceased by his parents Tom and Teresa, Tommy Joe will be sadly missed by his loving wife and best friend Joan, his daughter Aideen, son Bryan and his adored grandson Cian.

He is also survived by his sisters Rosaleen Halligan, Ballyglass, Josephine Walsh, Dublin, and Bernie O’Connor, Cavan, brother Sean, Claremorris, brothers-in-law Jerry, Michael, Joe and Patsy, sisters-in-law Gosia and Maureen, nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews, relatives, neighbours and a wide circle of friends.

Deepest sympathy is extended to the bereaved family on their loss.

Reposing at St. Colman’s Funeral Home, Lower James Street, Claremorris, this evening (Tuesday) from 6 to 8 p.m.

Removal from his home on Wednesday for Requiem Mass in St. Mary’s Church, Carnacon at 12 noon, with burial afterwards in Burriscarra Cemetery.
