Mayo native named new Leinster rugby captain

Leinster head coach Leo Cullen has appointed Lacken native Caelan Doris as the team’s new captain, moving away from the co-captaincy structure used last season.

The 26-year-old will lead the team following a standout year, taking over the role from James Ryan and Garry Ringrose, who will now serve as vice-captains.

Doris, who captained both Leinster and Ireland last season, has quickly become one of the top players in Irish rugby.

His leadership credentials were further solidified after captaining Ireland to a historic win against world champions South Africa earlier this summer.

“It’s a massive privilege to be leading this group,” said Doris. “I’m fortunate to have quality players and staff around me, and I’m excited to continue representing Leinster in the upcoming season.”

Leinster head coach Leo Cullen praised Doris as a natural leader, noting his rapid development over the last 12 months.

“Caelan has been outstanding both on and off the field. He’s a natural choice to lead us into what promises to be an exciting season,” Cullen said.
