Mayo senator responds to 'negative media coverage' of county town

A Mayo Oireachtas member has responded to recent negative media reports about Castlebar by emphasising the town's many strengths and the wealth of opportunities it offers.

Senator Lisa Chambers is eager to highlight Castlebar’s significant contributions to the county, its role as a key driver of economic growth in the region, and the strong sense of community that defines it.

She elaborated: "Castlebar is a vibrant town that offers a high quality of life to all who live and work here.

"It's a place that we, as residents, are proud to call home, and it has so much to offer in terms of amenities, services, and infrastructure.

"I want to focus on the positive aspects that make Castlebar a standout town, not only in Mayo but across the country."

Senator Chambers pointed to Castlebar's designation as a university town, with ATU Mayo providing excellent higher education opportunities and serving as an important academic hub for both Mayo and the wider region.

"The presence of this university is a key asset, creating pathways for education and skills development while also contributing to the local economy and the town's attractiveness as a place to live and work.

"In addition to its educational offerings, Castlebar is home to Mayo University Hospital, a critical healthcare facility that provides essential medical services to the people of Mayo and beyond.

"The hospital plays a pivotal role in ensuring that residents have access to high-quality healthcare close to home, while also being one of the town's major employers, supporting jobs and boosting the local economy.

"Castlebar is also known for its recreational and leisure facilities, with Lough Lannagh standing out as a state-of-the-art development that draws visitors from near and far.

"The leisure complex at Lough Lannagh provides top-tier amenities for sports, fitness, and family activities, complementing the area's natural beauty.

"Furthermore, Castlebar’s TF Royal Theatre attracts thousands of people each year, hosting a diverse range of performances and events, making the town a cultural destination in its own right.

"The town's retail and hospitality sectors also reflect its vibrant character, with an impressive array of shops and restaurants catering to a wide range of tastes and preferences.

Castlebar is also fortunate to have a green space like The Mall serving as a beautiful centrepiece in the heart of the town."

Referring to the Switcher.ie Work-Life Balance Index report published earlier this year, Senator Chambers reiterated that Castlebar is recognised as the best place to live in Ireland for work-life balance.

The study ranked Castlebar first out of 50 towns and cities, based on factors such as local amenities, housing affordability, access to green spaces, and good connectivity.

"Castlebar’s top ranking for work-life balance is a testament to the quality of life it offers.

"With affordable housing, low crime rates, excellent schools, and plenty of leisure activities, Castlebar is not just a place to live but a place where families can thrive.

"The town combines modern services with a sense of community, making it the perfect place for families, professionals, and retirees alike."

The report also highlighted Castlebar as the third-best place in Ireland for families, noting its welcoming environment, vibrant retail scene, and easy access to services and green spaces.

With its variety of cafes, major supermarkets, and leisure facilities, the town strikes the ideal balance between convenience and quality of life, making it a great place to live and work.

Senator Chambers concluded by saying we need to highlight and recognise Castlebar's strengths.

"Despite recent negative portrayals in the media, Castlebar is a town with immense potential and a bright future. I encourage everyone to see Castlebar for what it is—an exceptional place to live, work, and enjoy life."
