Independent Ireland announces Mayo candidate for general election

INDEPENDENT Ireland has announced that Councillor Chris Maxwell will be a candidate for the Mayo constituency in the upcoming general election.

The Louisburgh man was elected to Mayo County Council earlier this year, topping the poll in the Westport Electoral Area.

A dedicated sheep and cattle farmer and agri contractor, Maxwell is a passionate advocate for rural communities and brings a wealth of experience, deep commitment, and personal investment in his community’s future.

“Ensuring the survival of rural Ireland and safeguarding our agricultural industry is critical to the future of this country,” said Maxwell. “As farmers, we are the guardians of our land, and it’s vital that we have the support and resources needed to sustain this way of life for future generations.”

His key policy focus areas include:

Advocating for the €1 billion additional funding for agriculture proposed by Independent Ireland to support and sustain farming in rural Ireland.

Addressing the housing crisis by promoting planning reforms to reduce bureaucracy, allowing family members to build on their own land.

Supporting local tourism, industry, and infrastructure, particularly the proposed major upgrade of the R335 from Westport to Louisburgh.

Ensuring vital services, such as investment in school transport systems for Mayo.

Encouraging sustainable farming practices and common-sense environmental solutions, including river clearing to prevent flooding.

Party leader Michael Collins said: “Chris Maxwell is exactly the type of representative Mayo needs at national level. He understands the issues on the ground and has a track record of delivering for his community.

“His performance in recent local elections made Chris an automatic choice for Independent Ireland to represent Mayo in the upcoming general elections. His work on the ground for the people of his area has been outstanding for a number of years, whether as an elected representative or a non elected member of the community.

“He listens to his people and he understands the issues that really matter, we are confident that he will bring a much-needed voice of reason and dedication to national politics.”

Deputy Michael Fitzmaurice added: “Chris has proven that he is deeply committed to protecting rural Ireland and ensuring that local communities thrive. He is a passionate believer in the preservation of farming and agriculture and ensuring that our farmers and the rural way of life is respected and protected.

“His work with Independent Ireland will provide the change and common-sense solutions that Mayo urgently needs. I am delighted that he will be running for Independent Ireland in Mayo and he has the full support of our whole team.”
