Mayo rounders club celebrate double title falling short of historic treble

Breaffy Rounders Club came agonisingly close to securing a historic treble at the weekend, claiming two titles but narrowly missing out in the final game of the day.

Despite the disappointment, the club can take pride in their remarkable achievements, reflecting on how far they have come in recent years.

In the men’s final, Breaffy faced a tough Erne Eagles side. Unfortunately, Eagles proved too strong on the day, with their batting being the deciding factor. Breaffy’s batting fell short of expectations, and despite a valiant effort in the field, the Eagles found gaps and piled on enough runs to secure a 16-9 victory.

On another day, it might have been a different story, but this time the Eagles had the edge.

The day started on a positive note for Breaffy, as the ladies' team delivered a dominant performance against Glynn Barntown. They took control early, holding their opponents scoreless for four innings.

While Barntown fought their way back into the game, the Breaffy ladies held firm, ensuring their early lead would not slip. In the end, they emerged with a convincing 13-5 win, securing their title in style.

The mixed team then had a shot at the only title missing from their collection. As expected, it was a closely contested battle from the outset, with no more than a couple of runs separating Breaffy and Limekiln through to the sixth inning. Breaffy fielded first and took an early lead, only to see Limekiln catch up.

The Dublin side held a slender lead for much of the game, but Breaffy had a massive sixth inning with the bat, leaving Limekiln needing three runs to force a tie.

Breaffy’s fielding rose to the occasion, as they took three outs in a row to close out the game and claim their second title of the day.

While the men’s team fell just short, Breaffy’s double triumph is still a remarkable achievement.

From where they were three years ago to now being serious contenders across the board, a testament to the club's hard work and growth.
