Passing of former staff member of The Connaught Telegraph Joan McDonnell

The death has occurred today of Joan McDonnell, McHale Road, Castlebar, a much-loved and respected personality.

A retired staff member of The Connaught Telegraph, Castlebar, she died peacefully in the loving care of the staff in Cuan Chaitríona Nursing Home, Castlebar.

News of her passing has evoked a tremendous sense of loss in the community where she was held in such high esteem.

Paying tribute to her, one of her former colleagues at The Connaught Telegraph, Johnny Mee, described Joan as 'a genuine, kind and wonderful lady'.

"I am so sorry to learn of her passing. She was devoted to The Connaught Telegraph during her working career spanning over 50 years.

"She was exceptional in her role as company secretary, keeping the financial books in good order and looking after the payroll week after week.

"She had a great affinity with all members of staff and we loved her very much. It's a sad day for us all. I extend deepest sympathy to the bereaved family on their loss."

Tom Gillespie, former editor of The Connaught Telegraph, described Joan's passing as 'the end of an era'.

"She was the heart and soul of The Connaught Telegraph for over five decades and she gave so much of herself to the job.

"She was a leading personality within the business and we have very fond memories of her, memories that we will always treasure."

A prolific reader and lover of crosswords, Joan also worked in the former County Cinema, Spencer Street, Castlebar, for many years.

She is deeply regretted by her nephews Peter McCann, Peter McDonnell, Anthony Rush and Neil Rush, nieces Margaret Robinson and Cathy Rush, grandnephew Tiernan and grand nieces Caoimhe and Mairéad, relatives, neighbours and friends, to whom deepest sympathy is tendered.

Joan was predeceased by her parents Kathleen and Peter, her brother Greg, and sisters Patsy (Rush) and Pauline (McCann).

Joan will repose at Coady's Funeral Home, Castlebar, on Friday from 6 p.m. with removal at 7.30 p.m. to the Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar.

Requiem Mass takes place on Saturday at 11.30 a.m.

Joan will be laid to rest afterwards in the New Cemetery, Castlebar.

May her gentle soul rest in peace.
