Site identified for Mayo song contest monument

A POTENTIAL site has been identified for a monument to commemorate the Castlebar International Song Contest.

Castlebar Municipal District head David Mellett said it is a worthy project and the council is to investigate the costs involved.

Councillor Cyril Burke raised the matter at a local area meeting, highlighting the significant event the contest was in the town.

Taking place from 1966 to 1988, Castlebar's annual event became the second richest song contest in the world, having started with 70 entries to find a song to promote the town.

“It has a lot of significance,” he said.
