Exciting Mayo events for Architecture at the Edge 2024
THE 2024 edition of the Architecture at the Edge festival will run from today (Friday, September 20) until Sunday, October 6, in Mayo and Galway and will include the presentation of ‘In Search of Hy-Brasil’ Ireland’s national pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2023. Integral to the national pavilion is the representation of elements of the material culture of Clare Island.
Highlights of the festival include ‘Let’s Draw, Ballina’ at the Ballina Arts Centre, where participants will engage in digital arts workshops on Saturday, September 21.
Later that evening the Live Drawing Project in association with Ballina Arts Centre, Ambassade De France en Irlande, HeritACT and the Jackie Clarke Collection, will present an interactive digital community arts event at Hugh Ruddy & Co. Ltd. in Ballina.
The Linenhall Arts Centre will celebrate the publication of First Quarter by John Tuomey on Friday, September 27. In First Quarter, the architect navigates the places and memories of his life over 25 years.
Published by Lilliput Press, First Quarter is a personal and poetical account of childhood in Irish villages and country towns, student life in Dublin and youthful employment in London which will be celebrated in conversation, reading and song.
HeritACT Ballina, an EU-funded project focussing on cultural heritage as a catalyst for sustainable development, will present several events, including walks and talks on the histories associated with the HeritACT sites on Saturday, September 28, and Saturday, October 5, with Talks on the Town at the tormer Fashion Shop on Pearse Street. Ballina’s Co-Envisioning Day at HeritHUB in the Ballina Library will demonstrate digital tools, including SustainACT, which allows for assessment and contributions to sustainable targets including the New European Bauhaus (NEB), the European Green Deal (EGD) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Conservation Architect Úna Ní Mhearain of Consarc Design will discuss recent works completed at Westport House and planned conservation proposals to the interiors, and Kathryn Connolly, curator, will discuss the care of the collection during the restoration of the house.
Other historic structures open for the festival include the Lighthouse Keeper’s Cottage at Ballyglass Lighthouse with access to the film set designed for the forthcoming feature film Cry from the Sea.
Enniscoe House will be open for a tour that will chart the evolution of this significant country house which holds a scenic position in the shadow of Nephin, with fine vistas overlooking Lough Conn.
The Ballinglen Museum of Art in Ballycastle will present Patita Bourke Nicholson’s exhibition Paintings of Memory and Imaginationm including paintings of her childhood home at Heathfiled House, her home at Enniscoe, and Killala.
