New approach needed to tackle lack of road line painting in Mayo

THE council in Mayo should link in with other neighbouring local authourites to acquire and operate a road line painting machine.

That view emerged among councillors after a motion was put forward asking Mayo County Council to purchase a machine to do line marking in the county.

There are only two contractors available in the whole country and Councillor Mark Duffy, who tabled the motion, said repainting of worn out paint at disabled bays and junctions, etc., is not being done.

Councillor Al McDonnell supported the motion in terms of health and safety, saying there is no area where it’s not required.

He also suggested speed limits be painted on roads to cut out the need for looking at roadside signs.

Councillor Patsy O’Brien said road markings can be a matter of life or death and with joined up thinking between local authorities, there might be an easy solution.

Another issue, where roads are resurfaced, was raised by Councillor Ger Deere. Some were taking up to 10 months before road lines were put down again, which is ‘a disaster’.

He agreed a service agreement with other councils was well worth looking at.
