Minister commits to pursue Mayo harbour development

MINISTER of State Dara Calleary has committed to pursuing the development of Purteen Harbour in Achill following a meeting at the harbour with members of the Purteen Harbour Development Group and local Councillor Paul McNamara.

He said following the meeting: “This is a vital piece of fishing and tourism infrastructure for Achill.

“Councillor McNamara has received an important update from Mayo County Council re. the ownership of the harbour, which is now confirmed as being with the council.

“I will work with him to push Mayo County Countil to do the relevant work to prepare a 'shovel ready' funding application for a new development of the harbour to exploit its immense potential.”

Minister Calleary noted there is urgent remediation works needed to protect the harbour in the short term and he will discuss this requirement with his colleague, Minister Charlie McConalogue.
