Final stone laid in restoration project at Mayo heritage site

A WALL restoration project at Turlough Church and Round Tower has been completed.

Turlough Archaeological and Heritage Society welcomed a wonderful turnout for the final stone-laying ceremony on Saturday, marking the completion of the project to restore the boundary wall at the historic site.

It was a poignant occasion for the Lawless family, with the late Christy Lawless, a founding member of Turlough Archaeological and Heritage Society, honoured at the occasion.

It was a deeply moving moment as his wife, Mary, laid the final stone in memory of Christy.

“Christy played a pivotal role in the project, and his legacy continues to inspire us,” said the society in a social media post.

The society extended appreciation to Minister Alan Dillon, Senator Lisa Chambers, the cathaoirleach of Castlebar MD, Councillor Donna Sheridan, Councillors Al McDonnell, Blackie Gavin and Ger Deere, as well as to the parishioners, diaspora and generous community sponsors, Kenny and Seamus O’Brien, for their unwavering support.

Thanks was also extended to the contractor and stonemason, Jimmy Burke, whose exceptional craftsmanship met all expectations.
