Mayo sports sector seals over €9m. in central funding

An allocation of €9,033,312 has been made in grant funding to support 56 local and community grassroots sports clubs across Mayo.

The major news has been confirmed this evening on the social media platforms operated by Mayo Fianna Fáil Senator Lisa Chambers.

Nationwide, 1,996 grants have been announced, to a total value of €230 million for new and improved sports facilities and equipment throughout the country under the Community Sport Facilities Fund, formerly the Sports Capital and Equipment Programme.

Combined with May’s allocation of €26 million for sports equipment, the grants bring the total investment in community sport and recreation in 2024 to an unprecedented €256 million, the largest-ever investment in sports facilities nationwide, which has been delivered by government.

Among the major projects in Mayo to receive significant funding under the regional allocations are:

Ballina Stephenites GAA Club - Modernization of the Ballina Stephenites Clubhouse, €190,075 of €200,000 maximum grant.

Bohola Community Park - Bohola Community Park - Sports and Diversity, €178,885 of €200,000 maximum grant.

Castlebar Tennis Club - 2023 - Wheelchair Access and Padel Tennis Courts, €99,330 of €144,427 maximum grant.

Connacht Council GAA - Security Fencing (5 pitches), €143,173 of €180,000 maximum grant.

Mayo County Board GAA - MacHale Park Floodlighting Upgrade, €196,942 of €289,400 maximum grant.

Mayo County Council - 2023 - Castlebar Climbing Wall €351,100 of €500,000 maximum grant.

Mayo League Community Stadium Club CLG - 2023 - Upgrade of Facility at Milebush Stadium Castlebar €406,497 of €465,458 maximum grant.

St. Patrick's GAA Club Westport - 2023 - Phase 2 Mayo Camogie Regional Centre, €313,167 of €491,658 maximum grant.

Westport United Community Soccer Club Limited - Female dressingroom with disability access, €151,960 of €200,000 maximum grant.

Welcoming the major announcement, Mayo Fianna Fáil Senator Chambers said: “This funding for sports clubs in Mayo has been announced by my party colleague, Minister of State for Sport, Physical Education and the Gaeltacht, Thomas Byrne TD, as part of the largest-ever investment in sports facilities nationwide.

“This €250 million investment represents a 250% increase in funding compared with the previous 2020 round of funding, clearly demonstrating the priority Fianna Fáil places on encouraging and facilitating sporting participation and excellence.

“There is also a tremendous sense of community that comes from engagement with sports and their associated organisations.

"Ensuring that we have the right equipment in place and that adequate facilities are provided is key to supporting people of all abilities to get, and to stay, involved.

“This is an unprecedented level of sports funding and will prove transformative for sports clubs in our communities.

"As a party in government we are committed to providing everyone with the opportunity to participate in sport.”
