Mayo climbing wall facility set to be completed at last

A Mayo Oireachtas member has welcomed a grant of €351,100 in sports capital funding which will enable the completion of the much-anticipated climbing wall at Lough Lannagh Leisure Complex in Castlebar.

This funding follows an initial allocation from the Sports Capital Programme, that allowed the early stages of the project to get underway coupled with matching funding from ATU Mayo and Mayo County Council, and now, with this additional support, the climbing wall can be fully installed, and the building completed.

"This is fantastic news for Castlebar and the entire county of Mayo," said Senator Lisa Chambers.

"The climbing wall at Lough Lannagh will be a huge asset to our community, offering a state-of-the-art facility that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities.

"Thanks to this sports capital funding, we can now finish what we started and deliver a project that will benefit local residents, schools, clubs, and visitors alike."

The climbing wall is part of a larger local authority-owned development at Lough Lannagh and will be open to the entire public.

Senator Chambers highlighted the significance of having such a facility available to everyone.

“As a local authority-owned facility, this climbing wall will be accessible to all, ensuring that no one is left out and that the people of Mayo have a top-class sporting resource at their disposal.

"This will attract climbers from across the region and beyond, bringing both recreational and economic benefits to the area.”

She also acknowledged the tireless work of everyone involved in bringing the Lough Lannagh project to this point.

“I thank all those who have been working on this project over the years. This funding will allow us to see their vision become a reality.”

The new climbing wall will complement the existing amenities at Lough Lannagh, which has become a focal point for sport and recreation in Mayo, and is set to enhance the area's reputation as a destination for outdoor activities.
