Family-owned Mayo public house set to reopen after four years
A Castlebar pub synonymous with good music which has been closed for almost four years is to re-open its doors before Christmas.
Sloyan's Pub on Linenhall Street, which was founded in 1926, will be run under new management.
But the surname Sloyan will remain on the building.
Una, Donnacha and Paraic Sloyan have confirmed to The Connaught Telegraph that the rebirth of Sloyans is imminent.
“We have great memories of growing up here. Our mum and dad, Kitty and Denis, ran the pub since 1964.
“Our grandmother, Bridget Gilboy, founded the pub in 1926. It was a busy spot until we closed down in March 2020."
Saturday nights used to be legendary for country music type sessions in Sloyans.
Performers who graced the stage there over the years include Carmel McLoughlin, The Evergreens (the late John RIP) and Maureen, Matt Dillon, Gerry Carney, Stuart, Jason and Trevor Moyles, Gerry Singer and local group Buffalo Country, to mention but a few.
Apart from serving the local trade, Sloyans has always been a ‘go to premises’ for the hordes who have visited the town over the years for the Blues Festival and the annual Castlebar International Four Day Walks.
Una, who ran the premises for 30 years, wished the new lessees well.
She thanked all the customers of yesteryear who made the pub such a popular social venue.
“We made many friends and had great times here. But now it’s time for new beginnings," she added.
