Funding to support Christmas markets and lights in Mayo

MINISTER of State Alan Dillon has announced a once-off allocation from the Local Government Fund to assist a number of local authorities in the run up to Christmas.

It is intended that this funding will be used to support Christmas markets, or other such events and festive activities such as Christmas lights, in smaller rural towns in these counties.

These markets will encourage people to shop local and support local economies.

It is envisaged that each local authority will receive €50,000, including Mayo County Council, although the final allocations will be based on the applications approved.

Announcing funding of €450,000 for local authorities on the western seaboard today, Minister Dillon said: “As the minister with responsibility for local government, I recognise the vital role played by local authorities in supporting businesses in our town centres.

“By supporting Christmas markets and lights, we hope to attract more visitors to town centres, encouraging them to shop locally. This will not only help local businesses but also foster a sense of community and festive spirit.

“Additionally, the funding is flexible, allowing local authorities to tailor their projects to best meet their community’s needs, whether through markets, lights, or other festive events.”
