Road works in north Mayo town set to begin next month - Councillor

Fianna Fáil Councillor Michael Loftus has announced that roadworks to repair damage on Ballina Street in Crossmolina are set to begin in early October.

The appointed contractor will start the works during the week of October 7 and 8, with the project expected to cause significant disruption in the town for approximately two to three weeks.

"Please take this into consideration for those attending schools in the town," Loftus advised, urging residents to plan ahead due to the potential for delays.

In addition to the repairs on Ballina Street, Loftus provided an update regarding the ongoing efforts to address issues on the Castlehill section of the R315. Following inquiries from local residents, Loftus shared a response from Mayo County Council’s Head of Roads, Paul Dolan.

According to Dolan, a consultant is expected to be appointed by Q4 2024 to undertake essential studies, including a Nature Impact Statement, drainage design, flood risk assessment, and the preparation of a Compulsory Purchase Order.

The project is anticipated to be submitted to An Bord Pleanála for approval by Q3 2025. However, the timeline for detailed design and construction will depend on the decision from An Bord Pleanála and funding from the Department of Transport.
